Poppy's Funerary Vault

The Reincarnationist Papers

Poppy's Funerary Vault is a large, weathered structure in a cemetery and a place Poppy identifies as especially important to her. Its carved emblem, matching the tattoo on the back of her hand, gives the otherwise unnamed vault a visible connection to her private identity.

Setting and Approach

Poppy leads Evan Michaels through the cemetery with a basket, walking ahead while he struggles over the soft ground with a cane. She heads for a rain-streaked gray vault about the size of a small carriage house. Two thick columns flank its wrought-iron double doors, and fresh purple flowers stand in metal vases nearby. The scale and formal entrance distinguish it from the surrounding graves, whose ornate markers Evan passes on the way.

The Emblem and the Unnamed Vault

Above the arched doors, where a family name would ordinarily appear, the marble bears the same symbol tattooed on Poppy's hand. The correspondence makes the mark more than decoration: it joins her to the place while withholding the ordinary identifying inscription. Poppy does not explain the vault's history in this encounter, but calls it a very special place to her as Evan approaches.

Privacy, Memory, and Significance

The vault's combination of a prominent emblem and missing family name resonates with Poppy's later explanation of the Cognomina's secrecy. She describes that secrecy as both practical, because outsiders cannot share the members' experience, and traditional, rooted in a past disclosure that ended in the members' deaths and the looting of their treasury. The vault is not identified as a Cognomina burial place, but its emblem offers a concrete visual echo of the private identity Poppy describes. In the scene, the cemetery setting also turns her explanation into a personal invitation: Evan is brought not merely to a landmark, but to a place whose significance belongs to her.
